About Me
Childproofing Your Home And Garden

When my first child had an accident at home, I realised we hadn't childproofed the house as well as we could have. Thankfully, they were fine, but I learned my lesson and began a thorough inspection of my home and garden. I got to work addressing the various hazards we had overlooked, and I started this blog to help other parents think objectively about the hazards in their own homes. I post about a variety of topics, such as pool safety, choosing a safe garden fence, storing medication and cleaning products, window and door locks and kitchen safety for kids. I hope you find my blog useful and informative.

Best Types of Materials for Kitchen Sinks

Ana Gonzales

The sink is a prominent fixture in the kitchen so it is imperative that you make the best decision during renovations. Typically, the right product is chosen through consideration of a variety of factors such as cost, functionality and style.

While all these are important, the primary aspect to analyse before purchase should be the material because it directly affects the other variables. If you are considering replacing your old kitchen sink, here is a brief description of some of the popular materials in the market.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel kitchen sinks are ideal fixtures for modern homes and they are available in an array of styles and configurations. Most homeowners favour this choice because the material is very resilient and durable. The surface is not susceptible to cracks and dents. It also resists corrosion and has very low vulnerability to stains.

The main drawback is the tendency to rust when the finishing wears off due to exposure to acids and abrasive detergents.

Cast Iron

The use of cast iron in the manufacture of kitchen sinks is not new. The continued success of such products is attributed to the structural integrity as well as the classic aesthetics. Basically, cast iron sinks are made of a sturdy iron alloy and then coated with a sleek layer of enamel. There are different configurations available to suit specific tastes and though the sinks are primarily white, you can request for other colours from your vendor.

The associated disadvantage is the excessive weight of the pertinent products; you will probably have to reinforce the structure of countertop to safely support the sink after installation.

Stone

Though natural stone sinks were used in the past, their popularity has truly risen in the last few years. The commonly chosen types in homes are soapstone and granite but marble and limestone sinks are also established in the market. Stone products are purchased by homeowners because they resist most forms of damaging conditions ensuring prolonged lifespan.

The high density ensures that there is no risk of breakage and they are also heat-resistant since they are poor conductors. Moreover, they have no joints or seams to cause structural weakness and the surfaces have naturally unique visual appeal.

The key disadvantage in using stone sinks is the porosity which is high when the surfaces are not sealed well. Absorption of liquids will weaken the structure and accelerate staining. The high cost is also a limiting factor for most homeowners especially during renovations.
